You can make comments about the draft report (between January 14 and April 12, 2013), which will be reviewed before it is finalized. If you don’t like “climate change” this is your chance to tell Uncle Sam directly about it.

The current prediction (in the 2013 NCADAC draft report) for sea level rise in this century is: 1 to 4 feet (0.3 to 1.2 m), and possibly up to 6.6 feet (2 m).

The following article (appearing in Counterpunch), by Rob Urie, is an expansion on the theme “climate change is the exhaust product of capitalism,” which is also a point I allude to in paragraphs here and there in my various essays on the climate change. Urie’s article is an essay in political economy, no science is described, and Urie’s presentation does not descend to the granularity of specific “policy proposals.” I think of this article as Urie channeling Marx to write Die Klimaaenderung.

Rob Urie described economic “externalities” in his article. Here is a short video with David Suzuki explaining them.

  1. US President Barack H. Obama makes climate change a prominent feature in his second inaugural address (today). Maybe he reads this blog.

  2. “Chasing Ice,” & Climate Change Without A Doubt
    22 January 2013

One of my correspondents sent me the first link given below (which is essential viewing for climate change doubters, and Republicans).

I have added three more, to give you a little YouTube video series on climate change as exhibited by melting glaciers, as recorded by James Balog with time lapse photography. Balog describes how he evolved from being a climate change skeptic to a committed activist in publicizing this overwhelming reality.

    ALSO,

See the videos “Doubt” and “Hurricane Sandy-The Truth” at The Climate Reality Project web site (courtesy of GS):
    http://climaterealityproject.org/

“Doubt” describes how the public relations campaign put on by the tobacco industry to cast doubt on the 1964 US Surgeon General’s report on the link between cigarettes and disease (and mortality) later morphed into the p.r. campaign financed by the fossil fuel companies to confuse the public about the scientific consensus about global warming and climate change.

“Hurricane Sandy-The Truth” describes why that storm is an example of the extreme weather being unleashed by climate change, specifically because of a warmer wetter atmosphere.

President Obama made climate change a prominent feature of his 2nd inaugural address yesterday. A New York Times story about this is at:

It seems pretty obvious that Wall Street, whom Obama represents, has decided that the costs of denying climate change (and funding public deluding campaigns to that purpose) now have no benefit in comparison to making investments to both adapt to climate change, and mitigate its future extent (and make money along the way, passing the costs on to the sucker public).

You can see the 2nd Presidential Inauguration Speech of Barack Obama here (YouTube):

(“climate change” discussed for 1:15, starting at 12:00 in the video)
    or here (White House):

    http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2013/01/21/second-inauguration-barack-obama?utm_source=email195b&utm_medium=text2&utm_campaign=inaug2013

(Notice Mitch McConnell and John Boehner in the right of the screen early in the video during the swearing in, with their colorectal exam faces on — what fun. As one wag put it, now they can devote all their energies to seeing that Obama is only a two-term president.)

A century ago (April 1912), the passengers on the ocean liner Titanic were escorted to the lifeboats in rank order by class: first, second and so on. Today, we are all passengers on a Titanic called Planet Earth, which has developed a fever from an infection by capitalism, and we can be sure that any lifeboats that are developed to save people from being lost to a climate change cataclysm will be filled “from the top down.” As conditions deteriorate, the boarding lists will shorten upward (can anyone here be sure to be included?). Australian writer Jeff Sparrow presents his version of this theme in a recent article published by Counterpunch,

    The Fire Down Below
    http://www.counterpunch.org/2013/01/21/the-fire-down-below/

I think Obama cribbed some of his lines from my articles about him in 2008, but we’ll let that pass. I’ll have more to say on climate change in the future.

  3. Carbon Bombs: Havoc Accelerated, China And Australia Take The Lead
    24 January 2013
    http://www.countercurrents.org/cc240113A.htm

“Powerful thrusts are being made to accelerate climate crisis catastrophe (C3). These range from dirty energy projects – Carbon Bombs – to ideas for manipulating the ocean biology. A Greenpeace study finds 14 planned giant energy projects will increase global emissions by 20%, and China and Australia take the lead on the dirty path.”
